Quiz shows on TV, quiz apps for smartphones and tablets or even quiz cards and board games are still incredibly popular among all age groups.

Quizzes are also used in lessons: often as an element of reward.

But the quiz has even more possibilities! Here's why you should use it as a learning method and what you can achieve with a quiz:

Thoughtfully designed and filled with content that is relevant to the subject, quiz elements can really "show off" their added didactic value and increase student learning success.
In this form, the quiz is more than just a game.

Why do quiz games appeal to students?
The flow of the quiz is actually quite simple and predetermined: usually a short question is asked, followed by a small choice of three or four possible answers. Only one of the answers is correct. So basically it is a multiple choice type of test.
Still, we find it hard to resist the temptation to participate or watch others do it. And students are no different :)

We assume possible reasons for the fascination with "quizzes":

Show knowledge:
At some point, we all have a desire to show off our knowledge and shine with it. But kids don't want to be seen as nerds. Thanks to the quiz, there is no need to worry: thanks to the knowledge, the students help the team win!

Game elements:
Answer options, wildcards, records and other game elements make the quiz attractive and motivate participation.

Competitive nature:
Students are happy to compete with their classmates. As long as everything is done honestly and within a healthy framework, this is completely normal:

If you're playing a team quiz, it's important to make sure the teams have similar strengths. Or they change again and again. If the quiz is clearly lost, it can also demotivate students. A minor defeat has less impact and ensures that it remains exciting until the end.

In addition, teamwork can support social learning through the necessary coordination between team members.
There is always a chance for a correct answer
Even if the child does not know the correct answer, there is still a chance to get it right thanks to the suggested answer options.

Variety:
Game elements always have the advantage of adding variety to regular classroom activities. They offer students a different approach to learning.

No stress:
In general, a quiz is always a test. Unlike most other tests, the fun of the game prevails and there is rarely any stress.

In short: quizzes provide excitement, motivation, fun and variety of lessons - not only for students, but also for teachers ;-)

When can you use a quiz in class?

The test is suitable for allowing students to reproduce what they have learned and to test their current level of knowledge.

At the end of the lesson, you can check the learning level of your students with a quiz.
At the same time, the most important points are repeated through questions and answers - in an exciting and interesting form!
By correcting incorrect answers and providing clues to the correct answer, a quiz can close knowledge gaps.
Tips for taking tests in the classroom

The test can actually be used in all subjects. This is particularly useful for improving topics that are often less popular with students or considered rather dry (eg grammar, spelling, vocabulary learning, arithmetic exercises, etc.).

Questions should not be too difficult or too easy
→ one demotivates, the other leads to boredom

Incorrect answers must be corrected
→ otherwise students will not be able to fill the gaps in their knowledge

Provide additional information
→ Enrich the quiz with additional information in the question or answers, which your students will then take away with them

The quiz should be fun and exciting
→ Game elements or online quiz portals offer many options here

Don't just repeat
→ If the question is placed in a different context, students not only repeat what they have learned, but also have to transfer and abstract their knowledge to new situations

Connections between images and text
→ a great addition to text questions

Have students create a quiz
→ If you change the tables and let your students create their own tests, you will have to study the lesson material intensively
