Arm Activity Assessment Test (ARAT)
Advantages: a sensitive and reliable test for the assessment of functional limitations of the upper limbs. The ARAT test is a means of assessing upper extremity function and dexterity. Instructions: The ARAT test case is open and placed on a table (average height 76 cm) so that the lid of the case is level with the table. The patient is seated in front of the ARAT case, the non-paralyzed arm on the lap under the table. The patient is asked to lean back against the back of the chair during the test. The distance between the patient and the case should be such that the patient, extending his hand, could touch the back edge of the upper part of the case with his fingers. At the beginning, the patient is asked to place his hand on the table next to the noise reduction mat. The instructions are as follows: perform the task at a comfortable pace, to the count of 3 and after the start signal "yes". The stopwatch stops as soon as the hand is back on the table. The right part of the case is used for the right hand, the left part - for the left hand.
Necessary materials: a case with materials for conducting the ARAT test.
Scoring: The ARAT consists of 19 items divided into 4 subtests (grasping, squeezing, pinching, and macroscopic hand movements). Completion of each item is rated on a 4-point scale: • 3: Completes the test normally • 2: Completes the test but takes an abnormally long time or has great difficulty • 1: Completes the test partially • 0: Fails to complete any part of the test The first item of each subtest is performed first because it is considered the most difficult. The second point is considered the simplest. If the patient cannot take the test for any reason, the result will be 0. The maximum score is 57.
